Officer hurt after chase through 2 metro Atlanta counties, fiery crash

An officer in Cherokee County is recovering after a vehicle pursuit down I-575 that ended in a fiery crash, Channel 2 Action News reported.

According to the news station, five Holly Springs police officers were involved in the early Monday morning chase that started with an attempted traffic stop and ended when one officer pulled in front of the speeding vehicle, commonly known as a PIT maneuver.

The maneuver caused both the patrol car and a fleeing white van to crash near the I-75 interchange in Cobb County. The van was sent head first into a median wall, and two people jumped out and took off running before it burst into flames, Channel 2 reported. They are still at large.

The 15-mile chase also involved Georgia State Patrol troopers and other local law enforcement officers.

The Holly Springs officer was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with minor injuries, authorities told the news station.

Once the fire in the van was put out, a number of stolen items were recovered, Channel 2 reported.
