A multi-county car chase in Georgia ended with authorities locating three missing children from South Carolina.

Authorities from three Middle Georgia counties and the Georgia State Patrol worked together to arrest two suspected car thieves, according to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Anna Lewis.

Joseph Minter and Kandecia Meggett were arrested Saturday after a trooper did a PIT maneuver, ending the two-car chase on I-75 North, Lewis said. Three South Carolina children were inside one of the cars, according to Lewis. The youngest is 3 years old, and the oldest is 8.

It all started when Meggett and Minter went to the Volume Chevrolet car dealership in Forsyth looking to buy a car, Lewis said in a news release.

Meggett was handed the keys to a green 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe and refused to give them back. She then jumped in and took the car, according to Lewis. While driving out of the dealership, Meggett tried to run over two employees, the release said.

Minter followed in a silver Chevrolet Impala. Both refused to stop for police, starting the chase, Lewis said. The chase crossed the Monroe, Butts and Henry county lines.

After the PIT maneuver, Minter exited the car and was arrested. However, Meggett had to be removed from the vehicle by deputies, Lewis said.

The children, who were in the Tahoe with Meggett, were checked by first responders and had no injuries, according to Lewis.

The children are now with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office’s C.A.R.E. Cottage staff and are waiting to be reunited with their mother, Lewis said. No information about why Meggett and Minter had the children was released.

Minter and Meggett each face a felony count of theft by taking and have three pending charges of interstate interference of custody. Meggett is also charged with aggravated assault, Lewis said.

Both are being held in the Monroe County Jail.
