A 9-year-old Cherokee County girl was found alone and locked inside a closet of her family’s apartment while her mother and her boyfriend were at a court proceeding, Canton police said Friday.
Police were called around 10:30 a.m. Thursday to the Canterbury Ridge apartments after an employee with the Division of Family and Children Services reported the child had been left alone, Officer Pacer Cordry said. Apartment management allowed officers to enter the locked apartment, Cordry said in an emailed statement.
“After conducting a search of the apartment, the officers discovered the child in a closet/laundry room which had a folded up walker propped against the door’s exterior, preventing the child from getting out,” Cordry said.
The child was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being placed in protective custody, according to police. The girl’s 17-year-old sibling, who was not in the apartment at the time, was also placed in DFCS custody, police said.
The children’s mother, Amy Lynn Davis, and her boyfriend, Charles Adam Ellison, were both arrested and charged with cruelty to children in the first degree and false imprisonment, police said. Davis, 35, and Ellison, 34, were being held without bond late Friday at the Cherokee County jail.
