Pittsburgh police said an East Liberty woman left her four young children alone while she went to a bar because she said she was "stressed out."

Officers were called to an apartment on Hays Street shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday after an employee of the building found the children, ages 6, 4, 2 and 1 month, alone in their apartment.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by WPXI, the children's mother, 31-year-old Rosa Alvarado, arrived at the apartment about 25 minutes after police.

Officers said she was holding a can of beer and was "highly intoxicated," according to the criminal complaint.

Alvarado was taken into custody, and the complaint says she told officers, "I am stressed  out and I went to the bar drinking."

Alvarado is facing charges of child endangerment and public drunkenness.

The children were placed in protective custody.
