A man is jail after Memphis police officers found a dog inside his trunk.

Tracy Cowley, 22, is charged with cruelty to animals, driving while license suspended and violation of financial law.

Thursday afternoon, officers stopped Cowley near Ridgeway and Knight Arnold after noticing he was not wearing a seat belt. When officers approached the car they observed a strong marijuana odor coming from inside the vehicle.

After officers detained all occupants of the vehicle, Cowley advised he had a 4-month-old pit bull puppy inside his trunk.

Officers then opened the trunk of the car and found the dog panting profusely, extremely overheated and weak. The puppy was placed in the squad car and officers called for the animal shelter, according to the affidavit.

When police asked Cowley why he placed the dog in the trunk he said, “I didn’t want it crawling over my homeboys.”

His bond is set at $100.
