Investigators looked for evidence at the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive home in southwest Atlanta early Thursday morning.

Five children were inside a southwest Atlanta home when a group of men broke in, demanded cash and drugs and shot a man late Wednesday night, police said.

The children were in a back bedroom and were not injured during the violent incident, according to Atlanta police. The man shot was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and was stable Thursday morning.

According to a police report obtained by AJC.com, officers were called shortly after 11 p.m. to investigate the home invasion and shooting in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. They found the 29-year-old victim shot in his right leg.

Two other adults were also inside the home. A woman told police that her boyfriend opened the front door after hearing a knock and three gunmen rushed inside.

One of the gunmen, who was wearing a mask, forced the woman to another room, demanded that she get on the ground and asked her “where it at,” according to the report. Her boyfriend told police he was also forced to lie on the floor in the living room while another gunman went through his pockets and took his wallet with $200 cash.

He said he heard his friend, the shooting victim, arguing with the men before they shot him, an investigator said in the report. At least two more rounds were shot at random inside the home, the woman and her boyfriend told police.

They were unable provide a good description of the suspects.

“Further investigation revealed that the incident was drug-related and the suspects took a quantity of marijuana from the house,” police spokesman Officer Steve Avery told AJC.com.

Investigators believe they are looking for three men who were dressed in all black with their faces covered. The suspects were still at large Thursday.
