DeKalb County police Wednesday were investigating the overnight death of a man shot while in a car near an apartment complex.

The shooting happened just outside the Paradise East apartments in the 1500 block of Bouldercrest Road.

“Right now, we believe that there were two male subjects inside of a vehicle, and at some point, they were confronted by one or more gunmen who shot into the vehicle,” DeKalb police Lt. S.A. Stanfield told Channel 2 Action News.

The victims jumped out of the car and ran, but one of the men collapsed a short distance away and died. The second man was not hurt.

“One of the victims was able to get away and we do have him and we’re talking to him now,” Stanfield said.

DeKalb police Major S.R. Fore said the 24-year-old man who survived the shooting told investigators he and his passenger, also 24, were driving through the apartment complex when he saw several armed males dressed in dark clothing.

“He attempted to drive out of the complex when they began shooting at the vehicle,” Fore told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an email.

Fore said police were still working Wednesday afternoon to confirm the identity of the man killed.
