A repeat felon will spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of rape, aggravated sexual battery and other charges, Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds said Thursday after a sentencing hearing.

James Foster Beaver, 46, was sentenced to mandatory life in prison without parole, plus 20 years to serve.

A Cobb jury convicted Beaver last week of raping a woman March 14, 2015 in the basement of a home near Powder Springs.

Beaver testified during trial that he and the woman were doing drugs together, but he denied raping her, Reynolds said in a statement.

The woman, who takes medication for seizures, passed out and when she awoke the next morning, her clothes were askew and she felt soreness in intimate areas, Reynolds said. She called 911 and underwent a rape exam, which with other evidence led officials to believe she had been raped.

Attorney Lindsay Gardner told the court that Beaver, who has seven prior felony convictions in various counties for crimes including drug use, theft and aggravated battery, did not deserve to ever be a free man again, Reynolds said.

“The defendant sat on that stand and blatantly lied to the jury about what he did to this victim,” Gardner said. “He showed no remorse for anything. As a multiple-time convicted felon, he does not deserve to ever get out of confinement and have the ability to harm anyone again.”
