A drunk driver was convicted of murder after “intentionally hitting” a woman with his PT Cruiser in Fulton County, District Attorney Paul Howard announced Monday.
Superior Court Judge Doris Downs sentenced Alex Mason III, 65, to life in prison for killing Marilyn Taylor-Redding, 52, Howard said in an email.
Mason revved up his PT Cruiser and jumped the curb at the intersection of Boulevard and Gartrell Street in southeast Atlanta and struck Taylor-Redding Dec. 1, 2013 after the two had a dispute, Howard said in an email.
Witnesses detained Mason and heard him say Taylor-Redding "got what she deserved," the email said. The two had argued two weeks previously about an undisclosed subject. Mason's blood alcohol level at the time of the crime was .237 — three times the legal limit, the email said.
Taylor-Redding died at the scene.
“It was reported by witnesses that Mr. Mason revved the engine in his vehicle, drove the vehicle towards the victim while she was walking on the sidewalk, jumped the curb and struck the victim,” Officer Kim Jones told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the time of the attack.
Jail records show Mason was charged with simple battery in 1997, cocaine possession, driving on a suspended license and theft in 2001, armed robbery and aggravated assault in 2002 and DUI in 2011.
