The burned body of a man was found Tuesday afternoon in Whitfield County near I-75, and authorities wouldn’t say if their investigation is totally local, the Dalton Daily Citizen reported.

"We feel like if we can get him identified, it is half the battle right there, and then see who his enemies might be," Capt. Rick Swiney of the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office said.

The body was found by a 13-year-old boy who was walking in the woods near his home, the paper reported. The GBI and the county coroner’s office are helping in the investigation.

The body was placed in the woods and set on fire, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. The body had been at the location less than 24 hours when it was found.

Whitfield County is about 90 miles north of downtown Atlanta.
