A 60-year-old man was shot Friday morning while trying to stop an alleged shoplifter from leaving a northwest Atlanta gas station, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The victim, Kenneth Floyd, was not an employee, but he was sometimes paid to do odd jobs at the Exxon station on the corner of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and Northside Drive, Atlanta police told Channel 2. Floyd was sweeping the parking lot about 3:30 a.m. when he saw a man try to leave with wine bottles.

After trying to take the bottles away from the man, Floyd was shot twice in the side, Capt. William Ricker said. The alleged shoplifter ran away and has not been located.

Floyd was stable before he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, Channel 2 reported. He was already back at work Friday afternoon.

He told Channel 2 he doesn’t understand why someone would risk spending the rest of their life in jail over three bottles of wine. Floyd said he does not regret stepping in even though he was shot.

The store’s clerk gave security footage to police. He said the cameras captured a good view of the suspect.
