Chase on I-75 express lanes ends when suspect’s car gives out

A police pursuit through two metro Atlanta counties came to a sputtering stop Tuesday morning when the vehicle authorities were chasing experienced mechanical issues.
Henry County police helped to take the driver into custody once the vehicle slowed to 25 mph, according to department spokesman Sgt. John Davis. The chase took officers from Newton County into Henry on Ga. 81, then onto the I-75 express lanes heading north.
It came to a stop in the express lanes just before Jonesboro Road about 5:30 a.m. when the vehicle “gave out”, Davis said, causing some early morning trouble for commuters.
Authorities shut down both express lanes and a left shoulder on I-75 for a time before clearing the scene by 7 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

City of McDonough police first spotted the vehicle after Newton County authorities put out a lookout for an aggravated assault suspect, Davis said. Henry County police helped only to apprehend the driver.
“Henry County did not engage in the pursuit,” he said in a statement to AJC.com. “Newton County deputies later arrived on scene and took custody of the suspect.”
He was identified by the Newton County sheriff’s office as Jeremy Peavy, 35. Peavy was involved in a hit-and-run wreck on Covington Bypass Road about 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to the agency. His charges were later upgraded to aggravated assault.
Further details were not available as the incident is still under investigation, a spokeswoman for the Newton agency said.
