A jewel thief managed to steal three to four loose diamonds after smashing a case with a hammer he had tucked away in his pants, Dunwoody police said.
The man walked into Jared the Galleria of Jewelry in the 4500 block of Ashford Dunwoody Road just after 4:45 p.m. Thursday.
“After walking to the section that contained the loose diamonds, the suspect revealed the hammer and began smashing the display case,” Dunwoody police Sgt. Robert Parsons said Friday in a news release.
The thief ran to the store parking lot with the diamonds and handed them to a second person, who was walking up to the store, Parsons said.
Police said the robber was wearing a black sweatshirt, gray pants with a white stripe down the sides and white shoes. He was also wearing a black ball cap.
Police said the man is between 5 feet, 9 inches and 6 feet tall and weighs between 170 and 180 pounds. He had a distinct raised, dark blemish on his right arm. A description of the second person was not released.
Police said the men were last seen running toward Perimeter Center East.
