An inmate who escaped from a work detail Saturday in Carroll County has been recaptured, the Georgia Department of Corrections said.

Officials canceled a statewide lookout for John Peter Leonardi after they found him 12 hours later on I-75 North in Jackson, the Georgia Department of Corrections said in a Twitter post.

Leonardi, 51, originally escaped from the work detail in Carrollton, according to the agency.

Leonardi is serving two years for possession of drug-related material, according to department records. He was convicted in Houston County.

He was arrested in January after crashing into a utility pole while fleeing a Houston County deputy, according to The Telegraph of Macon.

Leonardi listed addresses in New York and Florida at the time of the crash, the Telegraph reported.
