A Hall County Sheriff’s Office jailer has been fired after allegedly using excessive force against an inmate over the weekend.
Jailer Dustin Charlton was terminated following an internal investigation into Saturday’s incident, Hall sheriff’s Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks said in a statement.
Wilbanks said that Charlton was involved in a physical altercation with a combative inmate, and after the inmate was brought under control and placed in handcuffs, “Charlton struck the inmate’s head with his hand.”
Charlton, who has been with the sheriff’s office since May, 2010, was suspended for five days without pay after he struck another inmate in a similar incident in 2010, Wilbanks said.
“Charlton’s actions are completely unacceptable and do an extreme disservice to those we are sworn to protect,” Chief Deputy Tony Carter said.
The GBI has been called in to investigate Saturday’s incident.
