A Cherokee County man was in a Waffle House restroom for two hours early Tuesday when police were called. Through the closed restroom door, the man told deputies he had a gun and wasn't leaving, the Troup County Sheriff's Office said.
That was shortly after 3 a.m., according to Deputy Stewart Smith.
"The male made it clear that he was armed with a weapon and refused to surrender himself," Smith said in an emailed statement. "After several hours of talking with the suspect, mutual aid was requested for the LaGrange Police Department to assist."
Negotiations with the man continued for more than five hours until the man was taken into custody at 8:42 a.m. at the breakfast eatery on Hamilton Road, near LaGrange, Smith said.
William Madison Cahall, 36, of Woodstock, was charged with felony obstruction, possession of methamphetamine, criminal trespass and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to police. Cahall was previously convicted of drug and theft charges in Florida, records show.
Cahall was being held Tuesday without bond at the Troup County jail.
