Remains found in a wooded area near a church in Banks County more than a year ago have not been identified.

But the GBI is hoping DNA obtained from a bone sample, a skull reconstruction and a sketch will yield new leads.

Authorities found the remains near New Salem Methodist Church on Ga. 59 in Commerce in February 2017, the GBI said in a news release. At the time, investigators believed it belonged to a Hispanic or African-American woman who was about 30 to 44 years old.

Officials believe the woman likely died four years before her remains were found.

A metal ring and a butterfly necklace charm were also found with the remains, the GBI said.

Since then, the remains were sent to the University of North Texas’ Center for Human Identification, where a DNA profile was submitted from the bone sample, the GBI said. The DNA profile was also entered in the FBI’s DNA database known as CODIS and the Texas Department of Public Safety’s DNA Index System.

Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI Athens office at 706-552-2309 or the Banks County Sheriff’s Office at 706-677-2248.
