The GBI is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in southwest Georgia that left a suspect dead.

The shooting happened about 1 p.m. Tuesday at a store in Arlington, about 190 miles southwest of Atlanta.

According to GBI Agent Kim Baker, an Early County sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to Jerry’s Country Meat and Catering Company following a 911 call about a man inside the store “making disturbing comments to patrons of the store.”

The deputy arrived to find a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road with its emergency lights flashing.

When the deputy approached the car, a man got out and approached the deputy, Baker said.

“The deputy deployed his Taser after the subject failed to obey the verbal commands being given by the deputy,” Baker said. “The subject broke free from the leads, making the Taser ineffective, and continued to advance on the deputy.”

Baker said the man hit the deputy and the deputy fired his weapon two times, striking and killing the suspect.

The names of the suspect and deputy have not been released.
