A man in the Monroe County Jail died Wednesday night after an altercation with employees, authorities said.

Joshua Marshall, 40, was arrested on Pioneer Trail in Jackson on family violence and battery charges after deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

While he was being booked into the jail, Marshall argued with jail employees and became unresponsive, authorities said. It is not clear from the release how Marshall became unresponsive.

The sheriff’s office said Monroe County EMS took him to the Monroe County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office, but results have not been released.

The GBI is investigating the incident.
