Caroline Smith, who was studying history and communication studies at Furman, died at an off-campus event in Hilton Head, S.C., early Saturday, university President Elizabeth Davis said in a statement.

“The university extends its most heartfelt condolences to Caroline’s family and her friends,” Davis said. “I hope all of you will do the same during this time of profound sorrow.”

The cause of death was not released.

Smith was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. Her brother, Ryan Smith, is a junior at Furman.

A memorial service is being planned in Atlanta to remember Smith’s life. The details of the service have not been released.
