WDRB in Louisville reported that the children were struck around 8 a.m. as they stood near the school bus, which was stopped with its lights on at an intersection. The driver of the SUV did not realize the bus was stopping and, in an effort to avoid striking the bus, swerved and struck the children.

"Apparently, he didn't see the children," Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman Dwight Mitchell told the station. "Obviously, a bad decision, and it's a very bad situation that's happened. Our prayers are with these children that they recover, that's the main thing."

No children were on the bus at the time of the crash. The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, WDRB reported.
