A 15-year-old boy was shot dead and his friend was critically injured as they walked along a street in DeKalb County on Wednesday night, police said.

The two, whose names have not been released, were walking along the 3000 block of Ember Drive in unincorporated DeKalb when they were attacked around 9:20 p.m.

“What we know … is both victims were walking up the street when an unknown white vehicle drove up to them, shot them, and just drove away,” said Lt. Rod Bryant of the DeKalb Police Department’s homicide squad.

The shootings, he said, appeared random. Each was shot several times.

Rescue workers took them to Grady Memorial Hospital, where physicians declared the teen dead. His friend, 27, was in critical but stable condition. He was able to describe what may be a white, older Pontiac that held at least one gunman.

Wednesday night, under the glare of lights, police combed the site just south of Interstate 20.

“We’re still trying to gather shell casings,” Bryant said.
