Two burglary investigations in Douglas County uncovered evidence against a career criminal that resulted in a 28-year prison sentence. .
A jury Friday convicted Tremayne Nations on charges he burglarized an Ace Hardware store and Able Too Rental in January 2014. Surveillance video, forensic testing on burglary tools, cellphone records and DNA on a cigarette butt linked Nations to the crimes, the Douglas County District Attorney Office said Monday.
“It is significant that just 23 days after being released from prison for the same crime, this defendant is out there committing a fairly sophisticated spree of burglaries that required planning and coordination,” Assistant District Attorney Samantha Newman said. “This is a defendant who has run out of second and third chances and deserves to spend a long time in prison.”
Surveillance video captured an individual who appeared to be Nations breaking into one store to steal expensive power tools and fleeing in a Dodge Caravan stolen in Austell, prosecutors said. Six days later, surveillance video linked the van and Nations to another burglary. When police found the van, they discovered a cigarette butt inside which a DNA test linked to Nations, prosecutors said.
Superior Court Judge William H. McClain sentenced Nations to the maximum sentence of 28 years.
