Coweta County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man during a traffic stop Wednesday, officials said.

Michael Johnson shot at deputies and drove away from the traffic stop, which led deputies to shoot him, Det. Kevin Yarbrough said.

A woman and a baby were inside Johnson’s car during the shooting, Yarbrough said.

Maj. Tony Grant with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office told Channel 2 that a deputy recognized Johnson that had warrants out against him.

At some point during that stop, Johnson got out and began running. Grant said the deputy yelled for him to stop and that’s when Johnson pulled out a gun and fired six rounds at the officer.

Johnson ran into the wood line, where he was killed.

A deputy’s car had five bullet holes in it, according to Channel 2.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
