A DeKalb County man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend was charged with feticide, DeKalb prosecutors said.

Carlos Jerome Simpson was indicted Tuesday by a DeKalb grand jury on charges of murder, felony murder – killing someone while committing a felony – aggravated assault and possession of a gun during the commission of a felony.

Simpson, 23, allegedly shot and killed Shikira Dunson outside his home on Feb. 18.

The 20-year-old Dunson was five months pregnant, so prosecutors added the charge of feticide, defined by Georgia law as willfully and without legal justification causing the death of an unborn child by any injury to the mother.

The penalty for a guilty verdict of feticide is life in prison, according to Georgia law.

Simpson is being held at the DeKalb County Jail without bond, and prosecutors during his bond hearing painted him as a habitual woman abuser who would try to persuade Dunson’s family not to press charges if released.

Witnesses told police the two were arguing in the driveway of his home when she was shot.

A trial will be scheduled at a later date.
