A southwest Atlanta high school student is at a juvenile detention center for bring a gun to school and fighting with a teacher, authorities said Friday.

A teacher at Benjamin E. Mays High School supervising students in the gymnasium began picking up jackets and backpacks that were on the floor. One of the students ran over and attempted to grab a backpack from the teacher, Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. Warren Pickard said.

The teacher then asked the student to let go of the backpack, and a struggle ensued.

The student struck the teacher several times while trying to get the backpack, Pickard said in a statement. There were no injuries reported.

After the altercation, the student’s bag was checked and a gun was discovered inside, police said. It was not clear if the gun was loaded.

After confirming who owned the backpack, “The student was immediately detained and removed from the campus,” Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Latisha B. Gray said.

The student was taken to Metro Juvenile Detention Center and is facing assault and weapons possession charges, Pickard said.
