Bond has been denied for a 53-year-old Lawrenceville man arrested after police discovered alleged explosive devices at the suspect's home, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Spencer Allen Braswell was denied bond during a court hearing Friday. He has been held since Wednesday night in the Gwinnett County Detention Center, charged with felony possession and manufacturing of a destructive device, jail records showed.
The investigation began about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday after Lawrenceville police received reports of shots fired on Springlake Drive.
An officer spotted a suspicious device behind a home, police said. The Gwinnett County bomb squad was called, and a search warrant was obtained. Technicians working with a robot removed more than a dozen explosive devices from inside and outside the residence and destroyed them.
“Nothing has gone off or anything like that,” Capt. Greg Vaughn of the Lawrenceville Police Department told Channel 2.
Police said they also found books on bomb-making and unidentified chemicals, and removed four computers and other evidence from the home. Meanwhile, nearby streets were closed for most of the afternoon. They were reopened around 6 p.m.
Investigators said they now are seeking to determine what Braswell, who lives in the home with his mother, planned to do with the devices.
A neighbor, Walter Johnson, told Channel 2 that Braswell “seems like a pretty nice guy. I know he likes to play with fireworks. I’ve watched a couple of his fireworks when he’s setting them off.”
