The man hit by a car Sunday night while lying in the middle of I-285 jumped onto the roadway from an overpass, officials said Wednesday.

The victim — a 20-year-old Atlanta resident — was hit by a BMW traveling west on I-285 at Buford Highway. Traffic was shut down for several hours following the crash, which happened around 9:15 p.m.

In the aftermath of the crash, it was unclear how he ended up lying in the second lane from the median wall. Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Tracey Watson said Wednesday, however, that the DeKalb County medical examiner had determined he jumped from the bridge overhead.

“It is inconclusive as to whether or not he was deceased prior to the BMW hitting him or if the impact from the BMW caused the death,” Watson said in an email.

No further information was released.
