A man robbed a Sandy Springs Kroger store and then held officers at bay for hours in a nearby wooded area Sunday morning, according to police.

Matthew Weber, 21, robbed the Kroger at gunpoint of two cartons of cigarettes, police said. Weber then ran into the woods behind the store. When SWAT officers arrived, authorities said Weber put his gun to his head. Negotiators convinced him to give up a short time later, according to police.

Weber was taken to the Fulton County Jail on armed robbery charges. He was also charged him with an earlier armed robbery that happened at Walgreens at 7530 Roswell Road on Thursday.

Weber allegedly told the Walgreens employees that he was robbing them because “he has bills to pay and kids to provide Christmas gifts for.” Police said took $274 and two packs of Marlboro cigarettes.

Weber also had two active warrants out of Forsyth County for burglary and possession of marijuana.
