Police on Monday were looking for the person who approached a 6-year-old boy as he rode his bicycle in Gwinnett County early Saturday night and shot him in the chest.

Ni-Shawn Moore was in stable condition at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston following the incident in front of a home on Caboose Court, police said.

A resident at the property said she did not know anything about the shooting, which occurred about 6:18 p.m. Saturday, Cpl. Michele Pihera said Monday. The resident told police she was with family and friends in the backyard having a party.

Police initially thought Ni-Shawn was shot with a BB gun, according to a police report.

It wasn’t until he was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center that a hospital staff member told police the boy was instead shot with a .22-caliber weapon, was in critical condition and needed to be flown to Children’s.

Ni-Shawn is expected to recover from his injury.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Gwinnett police at 770-513-5300. Tipsters can also remain anonymous — and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000 — by contacting Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS or crimestoppersatlanta.org.
