The carjacking and shooting that left a man in critical condition near Grady High School on Friday night started with an attempted drug buy, Atlanta police said.

According to an initial incident report, the two victims were at a gas station on Boulevard when they “ran into the brother of one of their old friends” and asked the man — who goes by the street name “Salsa” — if he could get marijuana for them. Salsa said yes, and two other men got into the backseat of the victims’ BMW.

“Salsa got into a different car and was going to follow them to where the marijuana was supposed to be purchased,” police said.

The two suspects, meanwhile, directed the victims to drive to the intersection of Charles Allen Drive and 9th St., where they pulled out handguns, put them to the back of the victims’ heads and ordered them out of the car. The suspects then took the car and drove south on Charles Allen Drive — and got stuck in traffic, police said.

“The victim saw that the car had stopped in traffic so he ran after the car,” the incident report said. “When he caught up to the car he opened the car door … and they shot him and fled.”

The victim was shot in the forearm and abdomen, police said, and found “lying on the ground screaming in pain.” He was transported to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition.

As of Saturday morning, no arrests had been made. The victims provided only vague descriptions of the suspects.
