Cop shot looking for stolen police rifle
A Cobb County policeman was investigating the theft of a police assault rifle from another officer’s vehicle when he was shot early Friday, police said.
The search continued Monday for the man police say fired on Officer Daniel Rogers during a foot chase through apartments near Smyrna.
Rogers is now home from the hospital, police said.
A $5,000 reward was posted last week for information leading to the shooting suspect’s arrest.
Residents of the Concord Chase Apartments on Hurt Road near Smyrna said Rogers was among officers in the area following leads on the stolen weapon.
Sgt. Dana Pierce, a police spokesman, confirmed Monday that the rifle was taken sometime in the previous month.
“An AR-15 was stolen from an officer’s (personal) car,” Pierce said. “That is why police were intent on canvassing the area of Caliber Lakes.”
But on Friday around 1 a.m., Rogers encountered a man police said was suspicious.
The man ran, and when Rogers ran after him the man turned and shot the officer, police said.
Rogers called for help. He was hospitalized, but has since been released.
U.S. Marshals are now leading the search for the gunman. He is described as a black man of dark complexion and slim to medium build with short hair in twists. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and khaki pants.
Anyone with information on the gunman’s whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477.
