Police charged five men and three juveniles after spotting a former theft suspect and others with stolen guns and drugs in southwest Atlanta.
The incident began when an officer in one of Atlanta police’s crime suppression units noticed the theft suspect standing with a group of men in the 3000 block of the Stone Hogan Connector on Thursday, Atlanta police Lt. Greg Lyon said.
With a suspicion this was worth investigating, that officer alerted his team, and other officers showed up on the scene.
It was then that police observed several suspicious things that ultimately led them to the drug and gun bust outside an apartment building.
While the team of officers approached the men, they smelled marijuana, saw a “partially-concealed AK-styled pistol” in one of the cars and a duffel bag between the men, police said.
From there, “it just kind of dominoed,” Lyon said.
The group was standing between two cars, with a retaining wall separating them from a nearby pool, Lyon said.
“A gun was dropped over the wall into the pool area,” Lyon said.
Another was found in the duffel bag, which none of the men claimed, Lyon said.
After a continued search, police found a total of seven guns, Atlanta police Officer Donald Hannah said Tuesday in a statement.
Three of them were stolen from various parts of metro Atlanta, Hannah said.
“Too often,” Atlanta police Chief Erika Shields said, “we see these guns used to create mayhem on our streets and in our communities.”
Along with a bong, gas mask and electronic scales, officers found six oxycodone pills, 25 grams of marijuana, Ecstasy pills, two hits of crack cocaine and six Xanax bars, police said.
Darrin Collins, Marvin Jacobs, Ebrima Jobe, Justin Hill and Jaquavis Lindsey were taken to Fulton County jail. The unidentified juveniles were charged and released to their parents, Hannah said.
Collins, Jacobs and Jobe, 22, were charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, distribution of drug-related objects and possession of tools to commit a crime
Jacobs, 18, was charged with two additional counts of possession of a controlled substance. Collins, 21, faces an additional charge of theft by receiving a stolen gun.
Hill, 21, was charged with theft by receiving a stolen gun, carrying a concealed weapon, reckless conduct, tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.
Lindsey, 17, was charged with theft by receiving a stolen gun, reckless conduct and possession of a pistol by a person under 18 years old.
