A Cherokee County sheriff’s deputy shot a man who took the officer’s patrol car and tried to run over him, authorities said.

The man, who authorities have not identified, then led police on a three-mile chase before being stopped by deputies and Woodstock police, said Lt. Jay Baker, a spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Baker said that about 3 p.m. a deputy was sent to a grocery store in the 14000 block of Ga. 92 following reports that a wanted individual was possibly in the area.

“The deputy made contact and the suspect fled on foot,” Baker said.

The deputy pursued the man on foot around the building, when the man got into the deputy’s patrol car, Baker said.

Baker said the man then drove the car toward the deputy, and the deputy opened fire.

The man then sped away, Baker said, and law enforcement officers chased him for about three miles northwest on Ga. 92 before police stopped him near Neese Road.

The man was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Baker said the man faces arrest warrants in multiple jurisdictions.

The GBI is investigating the shooting, Baker said.
