A man is in custody after carjacking a victim Saturday, sparking a brief chase that ended when the suspect nearly crashed into a home, deputies said.

Deputies said at about 6:40 a.m., Darrion Tompert, 21, carjacked a man at a Kangaroo Express gas station.

The 38-year-old victim from Daytona Beach told deputies he had briefly stepped away from his Ford Fusion when the suspect got in the car.

The victim ran back to the vehicle and was dragged through the parking lot as he tried to confront Tompert, who then sped off on International Speedway Boulevard toward Daytona Beach, deputies said.

The victim told deputies Tompert accelerated in reverse during the struggle, and the victim was dragged about 30 feet.

The victim sustained minor scrapes and bruises and declined medical treatment.

Deputies later saw the vehicle nearby and used stop sticks on the vehicle, which then ran through a front yard of a home.

The home wasn’t damaged, but the car went through a fence.

Thomas Swinton, the homeowner, was getting ready for company when he heard the commotion.

“So when I came out of the house I looked to my left and I saw my vehicle in my yard. So it had crashed into my hedges and knocked one of the concrete loaded steel poles I had put it in down,” Swinton said.

Deputies said Tompert ran from the vehicle and jumped over a fence.

He ran until a sheriff’s K-9 caught up with him.

Ammunition not belonging to the victim was found in the car, and the victim's wallet was found in Tompert's pocket.

The Sheriff’s Office charged Tompert with carjacking, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, aggravated battery and driving without a valid driver’s license.

He is being held in jail without bond.

According to jail records, Tompert has been arrested in the past on charges of grand theft auto, fleeing police and robbery.
