A 62-year-old man faces two counts of murder for a double shooting Sunday morning outside a southeast Atlanta home.

Rufus Weems allegedly shot and killed Chloe Dowdy, 18, and Christopher Welch, 25 on Bomack Drive in Fulton County, Atlanta police said. Dowdy died at the scene, and Welch later died at Grady Memorial Hospital.

“The initial investigation indicates the suspect and victims, who were acquaintances, were inside the location when an altercation occurred that resulted in gunfire,” Officer Lisa Bender said at the time of the shooting.

FBI Atlanta officials arrested Weems on Friday morning at a Jonesboro apartment complex located in the 300 block of Arrowheard Boulevard.

Weems waived his first court hearing Saturday morning, and the next court date is June 22, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said.

Fulton County Jail records show he was arrested in 2011 on shoplifting charges.

Weems is not eligible for bond, she said.
