A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday after he made a 911 call in Troup County, authorities said.

The incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. in the 100 block of Lower Big Springs Road, GBI spokesman Chris DeMarco said.

No officers or deputies were injured.

Roger Dale Sims, 56, called 911 and said he had just shot and killed his wife, according to  DeMarco. Troup County deputies and LaGrange police officers responded.

“Subsequently, agents discovered Sims’ wife died last year in a rollover tractor-trailer accident in Tennessee,” DeMarco said. “Sims’ wife was the passenger and Roger Sims was the driver.”

Officers found Sims standing in front of the residence Wednesday with a gun in each hand.

“Officers gave numerous verbal commands to drop the weapons,” DeMarco said. “Sims discharged both handguns into the ground and then put one of the handguns to his head.

“Officers attempted to negotiate with Sims; however, while speaking with him, he discharged a handgun at officers. Sims sustained multiple gunshot wounds by officers.”

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to DeMarco.

Six deputies and officers have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The GBI has been asked to investigate, which is standard protocol in cases involving use of force. This will be the 41st such investigation in 2018.
