Gwinnett SWAT standoff ends when father surrenders; 2 children safe

Gwinnett police and SWAT officers negotiated with a father overnight Wednesday after he allegedly barricaded himself inside his home with two of his children.

A father has surrendered and two young children are safe after an overnight SWAT standoff at a Gwinnett County home.

Police said Rashan Ellis, 39, came out of his Glenloch Place home and peacefully surrendered about 4:15 a.m., four hours after he barricaded himself inside with two of his children.

Police said they were first called to the Glenloch neighborhood, located off Lawrenceville Highway near Lawrenceville, about a domestic dispute. Two other children ran out of the home with another adult when officers arrived just after midnight.

Ellis slammed the door behind them, police spokesman Cpl. Wilbert Rundles said.

“Officers were given information that the suspect had a firearm in the house and two other children were inside with him,” Rundles said in a news release. “Officers were able to contact the suspect and speak with him briefly about the situation but he refused to come out of the house.”

SWAT was called in and began negotiations. Police said no threats were made against the children inside the house.

Ellis was arrested on a single count each of aggravated assault and cruelty to children in the third degree, as well as two counts of false imprisonment. He is being held in the county jail.
