A woman was killed and a man was shot Tuesday during a fight in Fayette County, officials said.
The shooting happened just before 8 a.m. in the 200 block of Tyrone Road in Fayetteville, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
Witness Nathan Cochran told Channel 2 Action News he heard shots and screams before learning that the mother of a 4-year-old boy was killed.
A man who ran out of the house and told Cochran to get out of the area turned out to be the brother of the man shot.
That man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Piedmont Fayette Hospital in critical condition.
The 4-year-old was found sleeping inside the home, Fayette County Sheriff’s Lt. Allen Stevens confirmed, but he did not witness the shooting. Fayette County’s Division of Family and Children Services is assisting deputies with the child.
Stevens said investigators do not know the relationship between the victims, but Cochran said the man shot is the boy’s father.
“He’s going to grow up without a family,” Cochran told Channel 2. “Without a mom and dad without question, regardless of whether the father lives or dies.”
Cochran believes the brother tried to stop the fight, but it was too late.
“She took care of her husband, took care of her kids, took care of the family,” Cochran said. “A regular homemaker; it’s just sad.”
