A body discovered on the campus of Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkston early Monday is being investigated as a homicide, state authorities said.
GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang said the body discovered about 7 a.m. Monday by a passerby “in a grassy area approximately 30 feet from the sidewalk” was that of a black man apparently in his 20s. Lang said an ID had been found near the body, but she couldn’t say anything else about the subject.
Patrick Bailey, chief investigator with the DeKalb medical examiner’s office, confirmed the death to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution this morning, but said it was being investigated by the GBI and the GBI Crime Lab.
Lang said other evidence was found around the body, but didn’t specify what it was.
Two nursing students attending the college said they hadn’t received any emails from the school alerting them to an emergency.
“We saw it (the crime scene) when we drove up this morning,” Cassie Carson, 23, said.
Abby Tyson, 26, found the incident, which happened in the middle of finals, unnerving.
“Very shocking,” she said. “You get concerned about your safety, for sure.”
Authorities have not said whether the deceased is a student or an employee of the college, which is on North Indian Creek Drive in Clarkston.
The college also has campuses in Alpharetta, Decatur, Dunwoody and Covington.
