Four statues and a wall at the University of Texas were "tagged" with graffiti overnight, school officials said.

The words “Black Lives Matter” were sprayed in red paint on the statues of Albert Sidney Johnston, Robert E. Lee, John H. Reagan and James Stephen Hogg in the South Mall. A half wall in front of Homer Rainey Hall was also vandalized, officials said.

The graffiti was reported Wednesday around 8 a.m. and comes two days after the death of David Joseph, a naked and unarmed 17-year-old who was shot by an Austin police officer on Monday.

UT police spokeswoman Cindy Posey said they are investigating the incident.

Some of the statues had been painted last June after the UT Student Government issued a resolution calling for the removal of the Jefferson Davis statue and UT president Gregory L. Fenves was reviewing the issue.

On Wednesday, local activists held a meeting at an East Austin church to plan demonstrations and other actions in response to Joseph’s death.
