UPDATE @ 5 p.m. (Jan. 21): Anthony Edwards was sentenced today to 12 years in prison for robbing three Dayton businesses on Linden Avenue, Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr.'s office said this afternoon.
Edwards was convicted on three counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, with a repeat violent offender specification attached to each count. RVO specifications are for defendants previously convicted of a first- or second-degree felony involving violence, according to the prosecutor’s office.
RVO specifications require the court to sentence the defendant to the maximum 11 years plus an additional one to 10 years.
According to evidence presented in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court:
— On Sept. 24, Edwards entered the Avenue Salon armed with a box cutter. He ordered the female employee to give him the money in the cash register, which she did.
— On Oct. 18, Edwards walked into the Kwik n' Kold drive-thru armed with a butcher knife. He held the female employee at knife point and took the cash from the register.
— On Oct. 29, at K's Salon and armed with a large butcher knife, he ordered the female employee to empty the cash register. The employee told Edwards the register was empty. She took money from her purse to give him. Surveillance video led police to a nearby home where they located Edwards.
Edwards was convicted of burglarizing homes in August and October 2002 for which he was given probation. In May 2003, he was convicted in a third residential burglary. His probation was revoked and he was given the minimum of two years for all three burglaries.
In 2009, he was convicted of robbing two other businesses on Linden Avenue and sentenced to a consecutive term of three years — the minimum — on each count. Edwards was on parole when he committed the three most recent robberies, having been released from prison just six months earlier, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Heck, in a prepared statement, said, “This defendant was given probation twice, was placed on post‐release control by the state parole board, and still refused to abide by the law.
“We argued and recommended that the defendant be sentenced to 21 years on each count. However, the judge sentenced the defendant to the minimum sentence. This defendant is a repeat, serial, violent offender, who must be imprisoned in order keep our community safe.
“His prior prison sentences have only served as a ‘time out’ for his criminal activity.”
