Baby safe after being taken for ride by DeKalb County car thief

May 31, 2015

A baby taken along for the ride when her father’s car was stolen Saturday night outside a DeKalb County pizza restaurant was found safe — the suspected car thief, however, remained on the lam.

DeKalb County police spokesman Capt. S.R. Fore said 9-month-old Brittney Cucum’Macario was left sitting in her father’s Nissan Maxima when he went inside to pick up pizzas at the Little Caesar’s at 3201 Tucker Norcross Road. The car, which had been unlocked and running, was stolen at about 9:45 p.m.

Channel 2 Action News reported that, about three hours later, Brittney was found safe outside a Publix grocery store on Shallowford Road, almost six miles from the Little Caesar’s.

“Employees of (nearby) Marco’s Pizza saw the vehicle sitting outside running …,” DeKalb police Capt. Nicole Rutland told Channel 2. “They saw it running later and decided to come out and check. Looked inside and saw the child inside and called 911.”

The suspected car thief was not with the car, police said, and, as of Sunday morning, had not been arrested. Only one person was believed to be involved in the theft.

No further information was immediately available.
