A Dawson County mother apparently shot and killed her 14-year-old son Thursday, then committed suicide, authorities said.

Just before 6 p.m., dispatchers got a call from the boy’s father, who said he comes for visitation every Thursday to see his son, Dawson County sheriff’s Capt. Tony Wooten said. When the father got to the home, no one came to the door.

“According to him, this is highly unusual,” Wooten said. “So he called and asked for a welfare check to be done at the residence.”

Deputies forced entry into the house and found the two bodies inside.

“We now believe it was a murder-suicide in which the mom shot her son, fatally wounding him, and then shot herself,” Wooten told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Friday morning.

Their names were being withheld Friday until relatives could be notified.

The shootings happened in the Biscayne subdivision off Harmony Church Road and Ga. 400, about 55 miles north of Atlanta.
