Some crimes are just unspeakable. Just ask Lovey Gilliam.
Gilliam runs a community garden in Oakland City. On Tuesday, she said, two 7-year-old boys slipped in, slaughtered 11 chickens and brutalized a rooster that died defending the hens, Gilliam said.
“They really tore up my rooster,” she said.
Atlanta police confirmed that an attack took place and identified one of the 7-year-olds as a possible suspect. Police said the incident was under investigation.
In addition to providing fresh produce, the garden in southwest Atlanta on Oakland Terrace partners with an elementary school by providing educational programs, Gilliam said. That relationship helped in investigating the massacre, she said.
According to Gilliam, one of the 7-year-olds confessed after he and his friend were identified by other neighborhood children who allegedly heard them bragging about attack. The other boy and his mother would not come to the door when she and the police visited the home, the woman said.
Gilliam said she wants counseling for the children.
“We need to get the boys some help,” Gilliam said. “We need to get them a psychiatrist. We can’t put a blind eye to this.”
