A Covington man with a long-running criminal history was taken back into custody Wednesday night after his wife was shot to death inside their bedroom.

Tony Lamar Holder, 48, was apprehended in his front lawn when Covington police responded to the 5100 block of Cook Street, according to the department. His wife, 63-year-old Carol Denise Holder, was dead when officers arrived shortly after 10:40 p.m.

“According to a witness, Mr. and Mrs. Holder were involved in an argument which escalated to the point where Tony Holder fired a weapon, striking and killing Carol Holder,” police said in a news release.

Both the witness and Tony Holder were taken to police headquarters to be interviewed, and Holder was arrested. He is being held in the Newton County Jail on charges of malice murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

As a felon, Tony Holder was not supposed to have a gun. He has served three stints in prison on various charges out of multiple counties dating to 1994, including a 2014 aggravated assault in Putnam County. He was last released in May, state prison records show.

Carol Holder’s body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy, according to police.
