A woman was killed in a Monday afternoon shooting at a Bartow County home, police said. Hours later, the man believed to have shot her was found dead inside the home in the apparent murder-suicide, the Euharlee police chief said.

Officers were called around 2 p.m. to a home on Winchester Drive in the Hunters Landing subdivision, according to Trish Sullivan, Euharlee city manager. The body of a woman, whose name was not released, was found on the deck of the home, Sullivan said. The woman was declared dead on arrival at Cartersville Medical Center.

The SWAT team attempted unsuccessfully to make contact with the alleged gunman, believed to be inside the home, Sullivan said. Officers obtained a search warrant to enter the home, where they found the body of a man believed to be the woman’s boyfriend, Chief Terry Harget said. The man’s name was also not released.

Harget told reporters the couple fought on the porch of the home before going inside, where investigators believe the man shot the woman and then himself, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Two nearby schools, Woodland Middle and Euharlee Elementary, dismissed at normal times, a spokeswoman for the Bartow County school system said. The exterior doors of both schools were locked during the police investigation.

Euharlee is located about 8 miles west of Cartersville.
