A woman faces several felonies after being accused of posing as a registered nurse and treating “children that had serious medical conditions” in Douglas County, authorities said.

Heather Denise Banks was arrested Aug. 10 on half a dozen charges, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in a Wednesday news release. Banks is accused of using the license of a certified registered nurse in a ploy to get more money.

“This is a major concern to public safety since Banks does not have the proper training and has admitted to working with at least two children in a home setting,” the release said.

Using the other woman’s license, Banks became employed with Omni Healthcare Services in Lithia Springs and provided home healthcare to children, the release said. Attorney Chris Flinn, who represents Omni, told Channel 2 Action News that a patient’s father raised concerns about Banks’ qualifications.

The father also contact the sheriff’s office, leading to the criminal investigation.

“It was the child’s father who was watching Ms. Banks when she was caring for the child who realized she possibly doesn’t know what she’s doing,” Lt. Trent Wilson told Channel 2.

When Banks was arrested, she admitted to investigators that she only completed a certified nursing assistant program, the sheriff’s office said. Banks also allegedly admitted to previously being employed as a registered nurse at another agency, but would not disclose the location to authorities.

The investigation, which took place in July, led to Banks being charged with first-degree child cruelty, identity theft, first-degree forgery, damage to property, reckless conduct and willful destruction of medical records.

Banks, who is at the Douglas County Jail, declined to comment about her charges to Channel 2. The registered nurse whose license Banks is accused of stealing told the news station that she’s glad the complaint was handled quickly.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 678-486-1242.
