A man called 911 early Thursday morning, claiming that he was in a Clayton County motel room with a gun and was going to harm himself or others, but when a police SWAT team entered the room several hours later, they found no one.

Clayton County police and sheriff’s deputies surrounded the Econo Lodge on Upper Riverdale Road before daybreak, shutting down the busy thoroughfare as well as a nearby shopping center.

SWAT negotiators tried to make contact with the caller by phone and through a public address system “for an extended time,” Clayton County police Capt. Stefan Schindler said.

When they were unable to contact the man, the SWAT team entered the room, but found it empty, Schindler told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Officers also checked the other rooms at the motel, “and everything appears to be just fine,” Schindler said just before 8 a.m.

“We can’t even confirm exactly who the individual is that made the phone call at this point,” he said.
