Cherokee County authorities caught up with a Canton man Wednesday, who dove into the Etowah River to escape capture earlier this month.

Terry Raymond Spriggs, 42, was arrested on drug, probation violation and theft charges and booked into the Cherokee Adult Detention Center, according to a news release from Howard J. Baker, spokesman for the Sheriff’s department.

Spriggs was spotted by members of the county’s multi-agency narcotics squad on May 19 at the home of a relative, according to the release. At the time he had several outstanding warrants and Spriggs fled the scene and ultimately eluded authorities by diving in the Etowah River.

Baker said Spriggs attempted to take cover in the same Woodstock residence Wednesday, where there was also a family with three children. After the family was evacuated from the house, members of the narcotics squad found Spriggs hiding in a closet, covered with a blanket, according to the release.
